Hi Brenda,
My googling many sites indicate steroid use in pg is assoc with LOWER
birthweight and not increased birthweight, although there may be other
studies.
I would not expect any difference in initial wt loss nor weight gain in
early weeks related to mother's steroid meds during pg. After close to 30
yrs of lactation-related work, I am not convinced of artificially inflated
birthweight, and this has not been established as fact. You might find
relatively recent discussion of that in archives helpful; I know I
participated in that discussion.
I would look to other factors, such as C/S birth, was it an induction or
scheduled w/o labor, mother/baby separation, delayed initiation, etc. The
maternal fluid retention can make latch on and milk transfer difficult, and
I'm sure mother was uncomfortable, and having difficulty positioning her
baby.
The usual STS, fix the latch, feed the baby, maintain/increase supply
measures would be useful in this situaiton. Keep us posted.
