Dear friends,

I prefer to use ''drinking confusion'' to include all ways of feeding other than at breast. And, yes, I do use the Dutch translation of confusion and I don't think that implies a conscious act. Might that be a language thing? In Dutch one can be ''made confused''. I explain to mom that baby is born with a plan or blueprint and that anything that differs from the plan can confuse him and that he needs to be coached back into the plan. And the differences can be with feel, flow, taste, texture, technique and more.

In Dutch first we used ''tepel-speenverwarring'' using the two different words for human nipple and bottle nipple and confusion (verwarring). Then we moved on to ''sucking confusing'' (zuigverwarring) which is most commonly used now. I prefer ''drinkverwarring'' (drinking confusion) because it is not about sucking but all kinds of drinking besides at breast feeding. Perhaps ''drinking disorder'' might be an even better wording to eliminate the confusion in this subject.

Warmly,

Gonneke, IBCLC, retired LLLL, MOM in southern Netherlands

Coach Smith here. I stopped using the term "nipple confusion" years ago
because "confusion" implies a cognitive uncertainty. ("I'm confused - do I
turn right or left at the next intersection? Do I scramble the eggs with a
fork or whisk?")

Babies who cannot latch and get milk from a normal breast are not "confused"
- they are COMPROMISED in their ability to coordinate suck - swallow -
breathe effectively. A baby who cannot get milk at breast may be immature,
injured, drugged, and/or have some other problem that renders him or her
UNABLE to breastfeed effectively.

This baby isn't "confused," "lazy," "unwilling," or even "exercising a
preference" - he or she is COMPROMISED and needs help to establish normal
feeding.
