I found it true of LLL moms who have peer support and encouragement to
usually breastfeed subsequent child longer. But, I'm always surprised at moms who
nurse the first for a year and then opt to bottle feed the next because they
don't feel they can sit down and nurse a newborn while managing a toddler.
These are usually moms who don't have peer support and little outside help
and just seem to be overwhelmed and think breastfeeding takes too much time.
Some of these moms aren't as overwhelmed as they are concerned that they are
doing the first baby an injustice by not being able to attend to the first
baby's every whim and want.

We are in the instant gratification age and I see more mom just giving into
ever whim their child has. I'm not sure if this is because the mom is a
product of the micro instant gratification age or it's the guilt of going back to
work and only having 2-3 hours of waking time with her children that makes
parents more apt to give instant gratification to their children usually in
the form of material things. Over the 31 years, I've done lactation support, I
definite see trends of change in social behavior in parenting. We certainly
have a bigger job than helping with breastfeeding. More parents today need
parenting skills. The breast, lots of hugs and focused attention are instant
gratification that builds trust and relationships, not reaching for material
things to meet the child's needs.
