Hi All,

 

I have worked with babies who had weight loss issues who were simply too
weak to suck well enough get milk from the breast.  Often times I have found
if they cannot get milk from the breast they are unlikely to be able to get
it from the SNS either.  Supplement until baby gains strength and can feed
better then supplement at breast if needed.  

 

Other time I see babies who have been damaged at birth for a myriad of
reasons.  Sometimes these babies cannot breastfeed - period.  Forget weight
loss issues - we are looking at a baby who cannot feed well with breast and
sometimes even with bottle.  Obviously, trying to supplement at breast in
this circumstance is not going to happen. 

 

I try to have mom supplement at breast when appropriate.  Sadly, some find
the SNS (or any tube feeding option) more of a pain that anything and they
are quick to jump to the bottle.  Then we get to deal with potential nipple
confusion - oh joy.  At least we can fix that!
