Cleaning off my desk! Found these notes from a session at LLLI conf this summer called the the first 40 days. Too bad we don't have this custom/cultural norm in USA. We do in our family. I'm sure many other League people do too.
The session was a discussion of the cultural aspects of a period of lying in - to protect new mothers.
1. Distinct Postpartum period
2. protective rituals/measures reflect a new mom's vulnerability.
3. Social seclusion and mandated rest.
4. functional assistance
5. social recognition of her new role and status.
Another quote from I don't know where :-)
Drained breast makes milk faster, Full breast makes milk slower.
