Kellie,

I loved what you said about the priorities you have for feeding your family on 
limited funds. Sadly, you are in the minority.  Most people do not have a basic 
idea of nutrition. Also, even if a poor mother wants to feed her family fresh, 
whole foods, the areas in which they live do not have supermarkets like the 
suburbs do.  For instance, produce is often scarce, of poor quality, and 
expensive, while the junk food is cheap, prevalent and attractively displayed. 
It is also easier to carry take -out from McDonald's on the bus than it is to 
have an armload of groceries. Where I live there are rural and urban poor, with 
many issues including lack of access to resources, reliance on a food pantry or 
other food service to make ends meet, and little or no education in meal 
preparation and/or nutrition. For some of them, contact with a person like me 
(lay b/f counselor) is the only understandable conversation they have about 
nutrition.
