I have some thoughts to toss out... I would love to hear other Lactnetters input and ideas....

I just watched this old 20/20 interview with Amy Spangler. (saw her at a conference recently, too... she's great!)

What struck me was the comment below from Jen the formula feeding mom when she starts to get defensive and feel guilty.

I've been thinking about this a lot lately. I thought of the analogy of the "Five a day" campaigne for fruits and veggies...

Do I consume the recommended "5 a day"... no... do I feel guilty... yes... who makes me feel that way...? me... why do I feel guilty?
because I know that my health may suffer in the future, do I blame the "Five a Day" people for making me feel guilty: no.

Does everyone who knows about the campaigne and doesn't consume the recommended "5 a day" feel guilty... no ...why? I'm not sure, maybe they don't really believe that eating the "5 a day" will make a difference, maybe it's too hard to change their lifestyle...

I still keep thinking about Jen... what would I have said to her if she said that to me? I'm not sure...

What would you say? What do you think about the "Five a Day" analogy?

Thanks for your input!

Sincerely,
Renee Mercier RN IBCLC

Do you see some similarities to the "risks of not eating 5/day" and the risks of not breastfeeding?

Why should I eat 5 A Day?

Research has shown that eating 5 A Day reduces the risk of cancer, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and other diseases. Cancer, heart disease, and stroke are the three leading causes of death in this country. People who eat 5 A Day have a third of the risk of developing cancer as those who eat only 1-2 servings a day. In fact, eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables could prevent more than 20 percent of cancer deaths each year. Jen: (formula feeding mom) “Sitting next to you, being the person that bottle feeds, I almost feel as if you are saying “I didn’t give any gifts to my child”

Facilitator: “I’m struck by the fact that, Jen, you sound defensive”
Jen: “Do I?”
Other mom, “Yeah, you do”
Facilitator: “Have you been made to feel …less than…” trails off
Jen, “I think right now I’m starting to feel that way”

Amy Spangler:
“Using a risk-based focus is always a difficult area to venture into, and it’s always controversial”
