Wow. I guess I took what I liked, and left the rest. I don't even remember
reading those parts. What I do remember is, we have had 3 babies murdered
locally in the past 2 years. One, the father threw against the wall. The
second, the mother shook until the baby died. Can't remember how the third
died.
We live in a low-income, low-educated, Appalachian area. Not that I'm
blaming nor excusing. It's just the way it is. There are precious few
resources for parents, and children. They are what we give them.
I would rather a baby was held than not. I'd rather a parent have a tool in
the box, than nothing. If this method helps someone, I certainly believe
it's better than beating them against the wall, shaking them until they die,
or screaming at them.
It's a tool. Tools are misused all the time. I teach children how to shoot
rifles and pistols. Many people are shocked that I can hand a 9yo a rifle.
We stress safety, safety, safety. In my mind, these children are going to
find guns in the house (at least 1 out of 2 local houses has at least one
gun, according to statistics), and it is better to know how to use it
properly then to play with it. None of the children who have used a gun as a
weapon have been trained through our program. We "graduate" about 60 kids
every 6 weeks. There have been at least 4 children involved in gun
fatalities in the past few years. None of them came out of our program.
We give the information, and it is up to the individual to process and use
this information. Perhaps they do not use it to the ideal of how our species
is meant to be treated, but it is usually better than the alternative.
