Again, in theory, there is a risk of Listeria on cabbage. Yes, you do
advise to wash it carefully before use, but avoiding the areola was one way
to protect baby.
There is no science that I am aware of that shows any babies contracting
Listeria from mom's use of cabbage on her breasts.
Anyone want to correct me on that?

I think the source of infection was in eating poorly washed raw cabbage in
salads or cole slaw.
We skip the cabbage in our hospital now. Our Mat-Child Mgr said if a mom
needs cabbage, the LCs can go out and get it.
The cafeteria won't stock it: too much waste and expense.
This is an example of a management theory that says: "Make the desired
behavior very easy and the undesired behavior very difficult."
So we use as many of our other skills as any given mother needs.

> Also a question/comment about cabbage. Why can't the cabbage cover the
nipple? That's often the swollen area we are having most trouble with!
I've never understood why that instruction continues to be made. The
original Australia research articles never included instructions to avoid
the nipple/areola.
