I'm afraid I disagree with the majority here. My first choice is always to
orally coach a mother through a technique with her using her own body.
If that's not working, and it is necessary to demonstrate techniques, manual
expression, breast holds, etc., I always use a breast model. I may hold it
over my own breast and shirt, but I feel it is important to do this to
reinforce a level of professionalism and a degree of decorum and dignity , if you
will, in our work. I can't imagine other medical professionals using their
own bodies to demonstrate to patients.
I guess the closest I could think of would be a plastic surgeon grabbing his
belly flab when explaining a tummy tuck or pulling back his face when
simulating a facelift. They don't do that. Even my physical therapist describes
rather than demonstrates exercises.
I admit it, I still do use my own breast in telephone counseling, but when I
have an audience, no.
