Responding to the question about feeding formula to premature infants when 
mother's milk has run out. In R. Lawrence's "Breastfeeding A Guide for the 
Medical Profession", Fifth Edition, she states that 2 studies 
support "inoculating" each feeding with some of the mother's own milk. 
This information is referenced on pate 454. Here is the (abbreviated) 
quote:
"A study in Guatemala that was repeated in the special care nursery of the 
Rainbow Children's Hospital in Cleveland (USA)showed that infection rate 
among sick and premature newborns was greatly diminished by providing 15 
ml. of human colustrum contributed by random donors daily. ...It has been 
suggested that mixed feedings of an infant's own mother's milk and formula 
to necessary volume be calculated over a 24-hour period so that the infant 
receives some mother's milk at each feeding and a supplement of formula, 
in contrast to alternating feedings or using all mother's milk until it 
runs out and finishing the day with formula..."
