If you are absolutely sure that the latch is great, and the nipple comes
out of the baby's mouth nice and round, and there is no brusing over the
areola, and there is no subtle tongue tie, then it might be
costochondritis, an inflammation of the cartilage of the ribcage. This
can cause shooting pain along the breast. from the chest wall toward the
nipple. Perhaps the way the breast is manipulated during latch or
breastfeeding is pulling on these structures and causing the pain.
Treatment is anti-inflammatories around the clock (ibuprofen 400mg q6h)
for at least 3-4 days, according to Dr. Syed Rahman.
Mom could try bringing baby to the breast, and not lifting her breast at
all. If baby latches to the breast where it natually falls, that will
reduce breast manipulation.
