Hi, Ann: I would like to respectfully put my 2 cents in re: the teen
mindset. They are into the here and now, not in the future. When I worked
with teen moms they would constantly remind me: "But, Pam, you're OLD!" I
would frequently ask them to imagine the future. "Imagine that your baby
is 5 or 10 years old now. How old will you be?" I would get a
shocked: "I'll be 25 (or 30)! I'm going to be OLD! I'll be like my mom!"
So the future means nothing to them. I would get around this by talking to
them about the body (image) that they were most concerned about right now.
Which meant that we were talking about how breastfeeding helped them to be
able to fit into their low-rise jeans and midriff-baring tops sooner. As
well as breastfeeding helping to fill out the top of those midriff-baring
tops better. THAT was what caught their interest. And believe it or not,
most caught on quite quickly that their babies were sick a lot less often,
which meant less time out of their lives as teenagers taking the baby to
the doctor or being stuck at home with a sick baby.
I miss working with my "girls" - they've taught me so much!
