Rachel asks about post partum Mom/baby separation routines here in the U.S.
Hospitals vary in their routines and I seem to have worked in one (at least)
of each kind! Generally speaking the hospitals with the higher number of
deliveries (at least here in the NE) seem to be more factory like in their
approach. This most often dictates that baby is taken from L&D to nursery for bath and
warming in isolette or warmer bed until parents either come looking or
someone decides baby can "go out". At my current hospital babies are kept for at
least 4 hrs because 'it takes that long for them to warm after their bath" !! I
made fast enemies with the postpartum nurse manager at my current job by
reacting in disbelief (on my first day!) to this statement on her hospital tour-I
really thought she was kidding! AFter witnessing the look of horror on my face
she exclaimed "the mother doesn't want the baby until its been bathed-she
thinks its yucky" I have SINCE mentioned that any bathing procedure that
requires 4hrs to stabilize temp is faulty and too stressful.... but it is falling on
deaf ears!
