I was at the WALC conference and didn't hear anything about abandoning alternate
methods of feeding and casual use of pacifiers.
Of interest is that on my way home I got an urgent call, a woman started finger
feeding with an S&S in the hospital, given a nipple shield and things going
poorly. I reminded her that the mother is always right and that the baby
needed to be fed. It turns out that she was not given a bit of instruction on
using the S&S, was tip feeding with it, the child wasn't able to latch at
breast with a nipple shield and didn't do well latching on a bottle nipple
either. I have referred this infant on for CST and a follow up with the ped.
So it was really brought home to me, that we need to individualize care and make
sure that parents get accurate information from care providers.
