This was always a big frustration for me when I worked as an LDRP
RN. For a while we had CRNAs at every delivery "just in case baby
needed resuscitation". Some were very good about being non
intervention. They would listen to lung sounds, for example,
through baby's back while baby was on mom's chest and only take baby
to the warmer to listen closer if they heard something of concern.
Others felt they had to do "something" to justify their being there
and for too many this "something" wound up being suctioning. One
really made me angry and frustrated. He vigorously and deeply
suctioned every baby, and was visibly annoyed when baby was on mom
and he couldn't get his hands on it right away. I actually heard
him say one time, "All babies are born in a condition of drowning
and it is our job to rescue them."!!!! (Gee, how did all those
babies survive where he wasn't on hand to "rescue" them?) I did
voice my concern about him and did not see him around as much
later. I think he changed from regular position to "pool" status,
so couldn't interfere with as many babies. Eventually there were
enough complaints about "so many people coming in for the delivery"
and knowledgable parents who requested "no CRNA" that t\instead of
being in the room for every delivery, they are "on hand" at the
nurse's station whenever there is a delivery happening. When they
are truly needed, they can be in the room within a few seconds.

Even when intervention is not needed, simply having it "too"
available can result in unnecessary interference with normal
birthing and bonding.

Winnie
