It would be so simple if, instead of asking "breast or bottle?" it
were put as, "Will you be breastfeeding?"  When on the fence, people
are more likely to answer "Yes" to a question than "No".  This
assumes breastfeeding as the norm and the ones who have to make a
"choice" are those opting outside the norm.  This doesn't "force a
mom to breastfeed".  It doesn't mean that when she answers, "No, I
plan to bottle feed." she will be looked down on or argued with.
One would hope that such an answer would be followed up, for
example, to determine what led to her decision so that if it is
based on myths or misinformation she could be given more correct
information.  I would personally would try to provide lots of
information and encouragement to at least breastfeed in the hospital
(and hope the kiddo gets her hooked (or unhooked?) on nursing).  The
simple shift from presenting it as either/or to a yes/no choice can
be a first step toward changing the whole paradigm for those who are
very resistive to big changes.
