I wrote last year about the brick wall I was struggling with in the form
of our local children's hospital physicians (who happen to staff our
SCN) who are decidedly NOT in the know about breastfeeding, nor seem to
want to be. I have been walking on eggshells for the last year, with
just enough support from others to keep going. That's a great deal of
the reason I haven't been as attentive to LN. It wears you out, that
balancing act and watching every "p" and "q"! Well, I finally crashed
and burned (meaning I've lost my lactation job) because I made the
comment that a mom's milk (a mom who was being put on Trileptal and
whose >5 lb baby is in SCN) was "safer than formula" for her baby.
Somehow my off-handed comment to the nurse found it's way the physician
in charge (not a big fan of mine, remember?!) and she *had* to go back
and tell the mom that it certainly was NOT ok for her to provide her
milk for her baby (thus saving the baby from certain harm due to my
advice!!!). Formally, the reason for my firing is that I didn't check
this information with the doctor first before giving it to the nurse,
though my comment and the mopping up that the doc "had" to do were all
included. I plan to file a grievance and have been saving up stuff I
plan to include in it. We have no union here for nurses and (according
to my brother the attorney) our state is a no-fault state basically
meaning they could fire me for not having the right hair color if they
wanted to! I still have the option of going to the media with what I
know is going on, but, as my brother (also a realist) points out, I
still need a job. Any help or advice would be appreciated. You all
were a wonderful support last year and I saved several of your comments.
Many here have pointed out that I'm better off, a sentiment I grudgingly
share but I still need a job and the moms and babies there deserve
better! TIA.
