This week's Lancet has an article on 'Low nutrient intake and early growth
for later insulin resistance in adolescents born preterm'. Alan Lucas is
the last author listed, after Atuf Singhal, Mary Fewtrell and Tim J. Cole.

The article is freely accessible on line even for non-subscribers (though
you must register, at no cost, first). The URL for the PDF-version of the
article is

10.1&x=x.pdf

From the 'interpretation' section of the abstract:
'Our results suggest that relative undernutrition early in life in children
born preterm may have beneficial effects on insulin resistance.'

My cautionary remarks:
Since the subjects were adolescents at the time of the study, we cannot
assume that these results will apply to the case of today's micropremies and
use of human milk fortifiers. But they should make us take notice,
certainly, and possibly lead to a review of policy about expected growth in
premature infants. Bigger, faster may not always be better than slow and
steady.

Acta Paediatrica article on risk factors for NEC
