The new issue of Journal of Human Lactation has a series of WONDERFUL
articles looking at the factors which precipitate untimely weaning. They
contain a number of insights about the things that predict success. Early
initiation appears to mitigate against some of the other factors associated
in many studies that predict early discontinuation: young maternal age,
c/s, etc. I urge Lactnetters to utilize the JHL for research -- this is
certainly one of the biggest benefits of ILCA membership. Additionally, I
believe all the issues are available on line for institutional subscribers,
so hospitals or other institutions could become subscribers and make access
available to staff, researchers, etc. The articles I'm referring to in the
current issue are all by MDs and PhDs, with support from IBCLCs, and the
designs look good. They ought to help make the case that more and more we
DO know what works to protect duration. Because initiation without duration
is only half a victory. There also is a commentary at the end of the JHL
issue about that Hall study that I keep talking about. That study states
that women with identified risk factors are weaning by the end of the first
week!
