I wanted to give you all an update on my situation.  I know many of you
wanted to know.  First, let me say, it isn't over yet!  I have been off work
for over a week, going back on Monday.  I will have a written corrective
action report put in my record and am expected to abide by some new
restrictions.  The managers want to make this all about inappropriate
communication on my part with the formula rep and the physician who came to
reprimand me.  You know I stated In my second post about this that I could
have reacted better to the physician and I have asked myself why I did react
the way I did.  It is not usual for me.  Then two things happened that
clarified it for me.  First, I had a meeting with my 2 managers Friday at
which they presented me with the written report they are going to put in my
file.  It included a quote from the physician that "she was in my face and
wouldn't back down."  I chuckled when I read that because I am 5'2" and he
is about 6' tall, 250 lbs!  Then, later I was sitting in the oral surgeon's
office waiting for my daughter to have a wisdom tooth removed and reading my
JHL.  I was reading the first article about burnout and the words "fight or
flight reflex" caught my eye and suddenly it clicked.  This physician, all
6' 250 lbs of him, came busting over to my office and came completely inside
my doorway.  My office is only big enough for 2 people.  That left me backed
into the corner of my 2-wall desk.  In essence, I felt threatened and I
"fought" because "flight" was out of the question!  So, I have some options
open to me, which I am exploring and hope that, in the end, breastfeeding
will receive more untarnished support, whatever happens with my job.  I have
read many of your stories of your own battles with formula reps and hospital
administration and I have to marvel again at the dedication of my fellow
professionals who often have to subject themselves to ridicule, punitive
action and loss of professional credibility simply for standing up for their
professional ethics.  I have begun to think of us as the heroes we celebrate
such as William Wallace in Braveheart or any American signer of the
Declaration of Independence, almost all of whom died penniless and in
disgrace for their trouble but who now are immortalized as heroes for their
foresight and their sacrifice.  So, my sisters and brothers, let the...well,
my brother the attorney says we should not use negative language like "the
battle begin", but should use positive language like 'shining a light on
what is being done in darkness' so...LET THE LIGHT SHINE!
