FYI,

There is a video tape (now in English and Spanish) on best practices in
giving immunizations. I was able to obtain the tape free via the California
Vaccine for Children
Program.

Although the tape does not show how to give immunizations while a baby is
breastfeeding, it does show techniques of how to give vaccines while an
infant, toddler or child is sitting on a parents lap (I think far more humane
than pinning a child on an exam table). Now that we have a larger vaccine
schedule there are several times when a child may get 4+ shots (especially if
they are behind).

For the last year, we (myself included) administer immunizations with the
patient sitting in the parent's lap. It takes less than a minute to give
four vaccines. The key for me is speed and comfort measures before, during
and after shots. Most of my parents choose to feed their little ones after
shots are given.

Please bear in mind that mamas are not the only people bringing children to
well child visits Sometimes parents are very squeamish and don't want to be
in the room when shots are given. I have quite a few dads and grandparents
that bring patients in for well child visits.

Wandering back to topics more directly breastfeeding related...
