Dear Friends:
Wouldn't you know that my very first post in a long time was sent in
error, before I had a chance to write anything beyond "world"? I apologize.
I saw a mother whose baby girl was one week old. Mother's complaint was
sore and damaged nipples. Improving the latch helped the pain but that isn't
what I want to share with you all. The baby weighed 8 pounds 10.6 ounces
before the feed started. She nursed for a while, then detached. Weight was
then 8 pounds 12.5 ounces. Nice, I thought to myself, nearly 2 ounces. Pretty
good for a damaged nipple.
We then went upstairs for some side-lying practice and baby latched on
again to the same (R) breast. Nursed for a good long time. Just for the heck
of it, we decided to weigh the baby again. She now weighed 9 pounds, 4.9
ounces. Net gain of 10.3 ounces from one breast in a little over an hour! Is
this a new record?
Scale, calibrated and digital. Baby in same clothing with same diaper on
during the 3 weights.
Baby was born weighing 7 pounds 11 ounces, discharged at 7 pounds 7
ounces. Weigh at age 4 days in pediatric office was 8 pounds 2 ounces. This
baby is gaining over 2 ounces a day! (Need I mention baby is pooping plenty?)
Mom's nipple pain and damage is in part from poor attachment, and from baby
"making her mouth small" (the mother's words) to control the flood!
     Warmly,
