Jodine,
I'm there! The AAP has hired an IBCLC (me!) to staff the Lactation Lounge
for all six days and field any breastfeeding questions that walk in. I am
very excited to be a part of this huge conference. Today was the first
day, and I will be there full-time the next five days as well. I am
working directly with Betty Crase, who is so very nice and has made huge
headway over many her years of promoting breastfeeding policy and education
within the AAP.
Lots of people there I'm hoping to meet over the six days, including Nancy
Wight and Larry Gartner.
The lactation lounge is quite nice, I have a very large open room with two
pumping stations with pumps and kits provided by Medela, behind privacy
screens, three glider-rockers, a changing table, an infant play mat, a
juice and refreshments table, and a table with all the AAP BF
publications. I had fun today with the new Symphony pump by Medela. Three
women expressed with it and had positive things to say. It was very easy
to set up and operate.
News from Betty Crase, I hope I get this right: New AAP BF Policy to be
released within 6 months or so (revised... will ask Betty tomorrow what are
the major changes) (personally, I would not be surprised if they are
lowering the recommended months of exclusive BF duration since I read in
two separate AAP materials today: 4-6 months, adding solid foods after 4
months, and consider adding iron supplements to those infants exclusively
bf for 4-6 months. BUT I DON'T KNOW if these are in fact part of the
upcoming policy changes, just saying what I read on some of their
publications today). Also that there is going to be a new public service
announcement campaign initiative promoting BF within the next year with
lots of agencies and HHS money involved, so that's good news.
Also excellent news is the fact that at this conference, there are two
sessions on teaching pediatricians Basic BF Counselling Skills, and two
sessions on Advanced BF Counselling Skills. ;) And they are having live BF
models (moms and babies) from an area LLL group to demonstrate and answer
questions. Betty said last year there was a mom tandem nursing a 6 month
old and a 2 year old, that introduced some pediatricians to the concept of
tandem nursing for the first time...
Anyway, that's the scoop. More updates as the week progresses.
