I'm not sure this issue is so cut and dried. Yes, bf is protective against
LATER osteoporosis. There is bone loss but it is rebuilt later, even better
(simple explanation). However, with the case presented, the mom has severe
osteoporosis and I presume she is at a young (childbearing) age. This is
abnormal and pathologic. I believe I have read some on this where
breastfeeding could indeed be problematic. I am not saying she cannot bf,
but that there is more to this than the normal stuff we tell moms about
osteoporosis. Please do a search on lactnet and other med sites before
presenting to the mom or the doctor that bf is definitely ok.
