I'm not sure this issue is so cut and dried. Yes, bf is protective against LATER osteoporosis. There is bone loss but it is rebuilt later, even better (simple explanation). However, with the case presented, the mom has severe osteoporosis and I presume she is at a young (childbearing) age. This is abnormal and pathologic. I believe I have read some on this where breastfeeding could indeed be problematic. I am not saying she cannot bf, but that there is more to this than the normal stuff we tell moms about osteoporosis. Please do a search on lactnet and other med sites before presenting to the mom or the doctor that bf is definitely ok. Laurie Wheeler, RN, MN, IBCLC Violet Louisiana, s.e.
