"Mothers who have more children, particularly close in
age, are more likely to have a fussy, high-need baby.
(I'm a little tongue-in-cheek here...!)"

Jo-Anne, since I'm the culprit, I'll explain!

The thread was to do with frequency of feeds,
introduction of solids, mother's perception, etc.
This example comes readily to mind as large families
of closely spaced children are indigenous to my area.
:~) I was simply making a comment about the
theory of relativity & its relation to lactation...

ie. Sometimes a later baby *appears* fussy to a busy
mom simply because her hands & head are full. I could
as easily have used the following example:

The mother of a singleton called saying her baby was
fussy & nursed "all the time." Since it appeared her
challenge was more to do with parenting than
lactation, I invited her to a mothers' meeting. She
sat quietly through a boisterous meeting, baby asleep
in a bucket. For two hours other babies in the room
remained glued to the breast, occasionally dislodging
to try the other. During the "questions & concerns"
section I asked her if she had anything she would like
to discuss with the group. "Oh no!" she exclaimed.
"Before I came to this meeting I thought my baby had a
problem. But you," she said emphatically, waving her
hands at the chronic nursers all, "You're the ones
with the problem!" The women in the circle laughed,
apparently quite content with their little "problems."

A tangent: My daughter is convinced Albert Einstein
nursed until 10; her personal goal has long been to
"nurse as long as that man." Can anyone corroborate
or debunk this?
