Aloha,

I was hoping for some insight. Initially, when this mom called, I thought it
was just a case of a bad start and needing to get breastfeeding going well.

Baby born at 37 weeks weighing 8 lbs 12 oz. Mom had problems nursing,
finally saw L.C at day 4. Baby weighed 7 lbs. 8 oz. L.C suggested mom use
latex shield and supplement with ebm. Also told mom to take fenugreek. At 1
week baby weighed 8 lbs. 2 oz. Mom stopped using shield. At 11 days baby
weighed 7 lbs 10 oz. Mom was told to mix ebm with abm to total 45 ml and
supplement after every feeding---this not by her regular ped or L.C. Mom
took baby in to hospital due to problem with circumcision.

Mom had enough supplementing when baby was 2 1/2 weeks and stopped
supplementing (finger-feeding). She increased her nursing to on demand. Mom
was bringing in baby every day for weight checks. Baby was gaining: 7 lbs
15.4 oz and then 8lbs. 0.6 oz.

Baby's ped was not concerned about not being up to birth weight at 2 week
check because baby was growing in length and head circumference. By 3 weeks,
baby has grown another inch, but lost weight---8 lbs. 0.3 oz. Mom insists
during this time of not supplementing, baby has fed 9-11 times per day with
10 wet diapers and 5-9 stools. Doctors weighed baby, then had mom nurse
baby, then weighed again. Baby gained 1 oz. They were not happy and told
mom to start supplementing again. No one is communicating with baby's ped
and the docs are scaring mom that baby's brain might not be growing. I
talked to her about the fact that baby's head circumference is increasing and
length is too. Doctors put mom on Reglan.

I do not think mom has a problem with milk supply. Look at diaper output
when no supplementing was going on. Doctor's have ruled out metabolic
problems, but mom says they haven't done any lab tests. I was thinking mom
just needs to nurse the baby, but with all the diaper output--how come baby's
gain is slow?

Thanks for any help.
