I don't have a lot of time to write today but do want to share that I
start mothers single pumping, and pumping into very small containers
i.e. directly into milk storage bags or sterile water bottles. This is
done because nothing is more discouraging than seeing 10cc of colostrum
in a 5 oz bottle. This way, the colostrum from both breasts is collected
in one place. Also drops of sterile or glucose water left in the bottle
will help "dilute" the colostrum. Most of our little premies are started
on 5-10 cc per feed so it is possible for mom to keep up. I instruct her
to start double pumping on the day her breasts feel more full and that
is usually day 2-3. I also have been writing a one page "LC orders"
sheet with pumping times clearly stated. I also chart these times i.e.
mom to pump at 12-3-6-9 (around the clock) please assist or remind her
as needed.
will try to share more later
