One of the Health Care staff here has found that when moms with mastitis
are given antibiotics, they or their babies later develop thrush
(surprise).
So, now the prescription the mom recieves includes the antibiotic AND
Nizoral (ketoconazole) cream for the nipples, with instructions to use it
twice a day and remove it prior to breastfeeding.

Would this be effective? I'm used to recommending taking lactobacillus
acidophilus, but if this would be better, I'm certainly not going to
discourage it - if not, what would you recommend?

Would it be necessary to wash the nipple - assuming, of course that most of
the cream is probably on the nursing pad or bra?
