I've been both - IBCLC without the RN, and IBCLC with the RN. The latter
is just easier to get a job with! I certainly didn't learn anything in the
RN program that improved my breastfeeding support of mothers, but it did
help with charting and communicating with the RNs and MDs as I learned how
they thought and they were more willing to listen once I had the RN.

The reality I have seen is that many large organizations (government,
health, private) have specific, inflexible requirements in order to hire
staff - and in order to fill those round holes with rectangles such as me,
sometimes we have to "morph" ourselves to get to the position where we can
make a difference.

I would never have been able to do the work I have done both in Puerto Rico
and here in California if I had not had the RN. The reality is, those who
hired me thought an RN was essential to the job. Once I started working
with them, I was able to change SOME of this perception. The IBCLC who
took over my position in Puerto Rico is an IBCLC without an RN.

Perhaps we will need some of us who can "bridge" between the different
professions and then help others continue?

However, I realize that some RN/IBCLCs really believe that one is necessary
for the other.

Frankly, right now I wish I were a Social Marketer rather than an RN -
that's what I need to do the work that needs to be done in my area! As
long as we live, I think we see new needs that help us do a better job.
Right now, for me, It's a Public Health Nursing Certificate. Who know what
will be next?
