My reflections back to my last nursing experience as I read this peom, were
thoughts of the mother's feelings of her loss. (Probably because I turn 50
this week.) Baby lead weaning was a bittersweet transition while I was proud
my son had weaning on his own, I was sad at the lost of a mothering tool and
a very special closeness. It was only the first of many different
transitions of a weaning nature between parent and child. Growth and
maturity often bring some pain.
I, too, wondered why this mother was imposing weaning on her three year old,
but I dismissed it because I felt that was her choice and I respect the
mother's choice. I think I've become more accepting and less critical in my
"old" age.
