My reflections back to my last nursing experience as I read this peom, were thoughts of the mother's feelings of her loss. (Probably because I turn 50 this week.) Baby lead weaning was a bittersweet transition while I was proud my son had weaning on his own, I was sad at the lost of a mothering tool and a very special closeness. It was only the first of many different transitions of a weaning nature between parent and child. Growth and maturity often bring some pain. I, too, wondered why this mother was imposing weaning on her three year old, but I dismissed it because I felt that was her choice and I respect the mother's choice. I think I've become more accepting and less critical in my "old" age.
