I once had a very sad case with methadone. A heroin addict became pregnant and
voluntairily and whole-heartedly decided to quit heroin and use methadone to
become clean. her boyfriend, the babies father joined her. Her gyneacologist had
her lower gradually to 20mg/day towards the end of the second trimester and then
keep on that for the rest of the pregnancy. The father proceeded and was almost
clean at due date. She was not to breastfeed, for the baby had to be in special
care and treated down the methadone addiction ''his mom got him on''. There was
no way I could make the gyn reconcider his treatment plan, let alone, change it.
The mom did not have the option to choose another gyn (as have none of medicaid
patients in The Netherlands).
It was very negative for the mom's self esteem, she wanted to be a good mom,
giving up addiction for the baby, the parents where guided by social workers,
gor an apartment and some social payment, the mom had a good family back-up
(didnn't let het down when on heroin and accepted her back now; her sister asked
me to help when she was about 36GA).
The baby ended up with a bottle...
