I apologize if someone else has posted this, but it is so worth reading that
I'll risk it. There is a wonderful article in the Aug 2000 DISCOVER
magazine on "Worrying About Milk". It actually has the following in bold
red ink:
The ultimate problem with cow's milk, according to nutritional biochemist T.
Colin Campbell, is that nature concocts different formulas of mother's milk
for different species. What's good for baby calves isn't necessarily good
for human babies or adults." p. 46

The article discusses the epidemiologic evidence against milk and it's role
in preventing osteoporosis (contries with the highest milk consumption have
the highes osteoporosis, and the Harvard Nurses' Study showed those nurses
with the highest dairy consumption had the highest fracture rate), as well
as the correlation between milk consumption and cancer and heart disease.
It also discusses the subsidies of dairy farmers by the US govt and "the
inherent conflict of interest of the USDA having a dual mission to assist
dairy farmers as well as to promote good nutrition."

Sorry to all those hard working dairy farmers on the list, but I have long
taught this in my nutrition classes (much to the dismay of our local dairy
industry in the Willamette Valley). I encourage all to read this
informative and factual article. If you doubt the Discover version, try
seeking out the original research from which it is based.
