I seem to be posting a lot, I guess it is beginners addiction syndrome...
have just been asked by a colleague for help with a mother who has a 4-5 mo
old baby. Mum had been diagnosed as having a brain tumour - no idea what
type etc, but it is deep-seated, between 2 lobes.
Surgeon told her she must wean - baby refused abm last week after the dye
exam - cried and did not drink for 24 hrs. Mum is very keen to continue bf,
fed 2 other children for a long time.
I can't see why she can't bf - allowing for the immediate post-op period,
and she has bought a minielectric pump to express, is building up a supply
of frozen milk. i have listened to tapes from Dr Hale (conference in
Brisbane, Australia) on anaesthetics and bf, and apart from any usual
precautions with some drugs can't really see a reason that the dr would want
her to wean.
Have reminded my m/w collegue about the beneficial effects of bf for the mum
at this time eg self-esteem, one thing she can do while recovering etc - and
she is very supportive of the bf relationship continuing.

Am I missing something here? I have never worked in neurosurgery so am a
complete novice, and am not yet a lc so amybe I am overlooking some good
reason for weaning (assuming the mum is not put onto chemotherapy if the
tumour is cancerous)? Is this a case of the dr not being well-informed??

Help and ideas please!!

Back to the Whittlestone pump - will try and contact the ex-LLL leader who
has the patent/selling to the US manufacturer for a brand name/more
information on this pump.
