Connie Mahar-Sylvestre:
Welcome to Lactnet and good luck in your pursuit of helping moms and
babies. In spite of some frustrations, it is really rewarding work.

The variety of "titles" are confusing, aren't they? With the
exception of IBCLC which is conferred independently of any
educational program, the othere are ( if believe) all labels
conferred as recognition of the completion of some sort of
education. In some cases it may be only a one or two day program
while others are a week long and others may take several months to
complete, especially the ones done primarily by correspondence.
That's why so many of us believe the IBCLC is the only truly
reliable title.
LLL Leader is a little different in that the preparation and
conferring of the label are what I would call "internal". Criteria
are determined by the organization. The "training" is done through
the organization. Lastly, the title is intended to be used in
representing that organization. By contrast, the various other
lactation titles (including IBCLC) allow that individual to function
independently of the certifying organization (although at least in
the case of IBCLC there is an accountability to the organization to
maintain certain standards).

Regarding the "biting" - some moms find that applying a little
teething lotion to the gums before nursing reduces the clamping
down. There may be more complex factors where something like
cranial-sacral therapy would be helpful.
