After over a year, we are slowly coming out of the Covid-19 pandemic. The Fairfax Library system is opening up June 5th. Although the library’s online room reservation system is still not available, we expect for it to open up soon. We are trying to ascertain the membership’s interest in resuming the Virginia SIG meetings that have been in hiatus during the pandemic. If you are interested in seeing meetings restart, please respond to this email ASAP.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all Fairfax County Public Library facilities will be closed until further notice. All meeting room reservations are cancelled through May 31. See: https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/library/all-fcpl-locations-closed-316-329
Therefore, the VASIG April and May meetings are cancelled. Our next potential meeting date is June 9. As the situation develops, we will reevaluate and update you on whether we will hold a meeting that month.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Fairfax Library has cancelled the use of meeting rooms through April 12. Our initial meeting reservation was for April 7, with a backup date of April 21 (the 14th was already taken.)
Since many VA-SIG meeting attendees fall into one of the high risk groups of the pandemic, and following health experts concerns on gatherings, we have decided to NOT meet in April.
As the world’s largest library the Library of Congress has a wide variety of digital file formats in its collections, from MXF to XML, GIF to TIFF, WAV to WARC and many more. The various flavors of PDF (Portable Document Format with the .pdf extension) are a significant percentage, comprising about 110 TB or over 100 million files currently in digital storage and growing, including many gathered by harvesting government web archives.

WHY I AM NOT IN LOVE WITH WINDOWS
Windows 7 is no longer supported by Microsoft. Windows 8/8.1 had so many issues, many believed that it was never worth installing and is now also no longer supported by Microsoft. Although you may believe you upgraded to Windows 10 for free, or just paid a one time purchase, Microsoft generates income from Windows 10 through: -Apps, games, movies and other items from the Microsoft Store -Bloatware apps that are preinstalled in Windows 10 or are installed

WHAT'S A ROUTER AND WHY DO I WANT ONE?
At this month's meeting presentation, Gabe Goldberg will discuss routers. The electronic box connected between your ISP’s wall connection and your home network is almost certainly a router (providing Ethernet ports and WiFi access), or perhaps it’s a router with added capabilities (e.g., modem converting ISP connectivity to Ethernet). You’re hardly alone if you haven’t given it much thought, since it likely "just works", year after year. But routers are complex devices: in fact, they’re computers

ENCRYPTED DNS
At this presentation we will cover why the big ISPs are not happy about encrypted Domain Name System (DNS)? Currently, most DNS queries are unencrypted, which raises privacy and security concerns. Google and Mozilla are trying to address these concerns by adding support in their browsers for sending DNS queries over the encrypted HTTPS protocol. But major Internet service providers have cried foul.

Meeting Topic: WINDOWS KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS AND OTHER TIPS AND TRICKS
At this presentation we will cover useful Windows tips including keyboard shortcuts and hidden time savers. Examples include launching and controlling apps and applets via the keyboard.
It was mentioned recently that Micro Center had a policy of not installing anything on a PC more than than three years old. I checked with store manager (he's very helpful and supportive for user groups); His responses:
/I am 99% sure that is totally untrue. Tomorrow, I'm going to make sure that my techs have never said that and I will get back to you with a definitive no. Thanks./

Meeting Topic: NINITE
Ninite is a freeware package management system that allows users to make a selection from a list of Windows applications, bundles the selection into a single installer package and have many of your favorite apps automatically installed/updated all at once. The presentation will also provide a brief discussion of some of the apps that can be installed with Ninite.
Because of Fairfax County Library room reservation constrains --such as previous booked events, library closure, meeting room blackout dates, etc.--, future Virginia SIG meeting dates at the Patrick Henry Library will need to be changed. The following is a list of meeting dates for the rest of 2019:

DNS SECURITY EXTENSIONS (DNSSEC)
DNS Security Extensions (DNSSEC) were originally introduced in 1997 to address the security limitations of the original DNS protocol. DNS (Domain Name System) is one protocol of the TCP/IP protocol suite for how computers exchange data on the internet. However, as of December, 2017, only ~1% of .com, .net and .org domains deploy DNSSEC, and over 30% of these domains are, in fact, misconfigured.
As I mentioned at yesterday's meeting, I am forwarding the presentation via the Virginia SIG announcement list. Attached you will find a .pdf file of Tuesday's Smart Home presentation.

WINDOWS INSTALL / REINSTALL / UPGRADE
On Windows, a clean installation is the best option to remove everything from the hard drive and start from scratch when your device is having performance and other issues. Using this process, you can quickly resolve startup and shut down problems as well as memory usage and apps issues. In addition, you can quickly get rid of viruses and other types of malware, fix system corruption and improve battery life.
Due to personal distraction, I did not put out an announcement message for May's Virginia SIG meeting. I had been preoccupied with the care of a dear family friend, who is now in hospice care, and forgot. It was my oversight. I'll take a "Mea Culpa, Mea Culpa, Mea Maxima Culpa" for that and will try to ensure it will not reoccur.

DIGITAL CERTIFICATES
We turn to the internet for everything. From selling to buying, it is the introduction of an E-world. With this dominating trend, online security is a necessity.
This month we discuss web site certificates and certificate authorities. In addition to supporting the transmission of web pages, transport layer security (TLS) has been implemented for applications that communicate with each other over the Internet, such as, email, file transfer, instant messaging, and voice over IP.
April 8, Fairfax County Government Center, all day
It's educational, free, with presentations and exhibits.
I'm still puzzling out how groups might participate but I think we might be able to put volunteers at some exhibits, giving tech advice/help and (not incidentally) highlighting our groups, PATACS and Apple Pi.
So let me know if you might -- in some form yet to be determined! -- pitch in.

MORE CHOICES FOR YOUR DNS SERVER
At this month's presentation, Mark Mabee will discuss DNS services. It's easy to use the DNS servers provided by your ISP. But there are alternatives now, and very soon you should be able to use DNS over HTTPS (DoH) and DNS over TLS (DoT).
Apologies to our members that came out for today’s meeting and could not get into the meeting room. Since the library closes early on Wednesday at 6:00 pm, we needed to pick up the key to the room by closing time. We arrived right after 6:00 and were unable to get a key. Again, our apologies.
Very strange -- Dan and I WERE in the meeting room -- which was open -- until about 7:30.
Given tiny turnout for these meetings -- five audience members on a busy night -- I question the point in continuing. Especially considering large effort Mark (primarily) puts into preparing presentations.
I think it makes much more sense to attend either/both www.patacs.org and www.wap.org meetings. These are active groups which draw 30-60 people to meetings.

If you liked CPCUG back in its glory days, you should like PATACS -- Potomac Area Technology and Computer Society. It's a mouthful name describing a 100-or-so-member group just like CPCUG used to be: friendly meetings, members-helping-members, monthly newsletter, three monthly meetings (two in Arlington, one in Fairfax), a party or two every year, two free hands-on problem-solving PC clinics, "pizza SIG" outings following Arlington meetings, member discounts, etc.
...at least like CPCUG used to be, in the old days.

Tech Tips for the Basic Computer User -- David Pogue

"One of these days, I'm going to write a book called, 'The Basics.' It's going to be a compendium of the essential tech bits that you just assume everyone knows–but you're wrong.
Save Money and Support a DC-Area Community Group -- CPCUG
Entertainment discount coupon books offer hundreds of discount opportunities on dining (usually two-for-one deals, buy one and get one free), travel (airline, hotel, car rental), shopping, sporting events, theater, movies, dry cleaning, auto repair, and much more.
These aren't "discounts" requiring spending extra money, buying things you wouldn't have bought, in order to "save" money. These are real-life discounts available on routine everyday purchases. I just saved more than $200 on one hotel stay by booking through Entertainment.
