I'd like to hear your reasoning on that Pete.  Our European bees evolved
from Africans, that I would (perhaps erroneously) assume also had access to
hollow trees and other safe places.  And at least some European races or
feral populations are hotter than firecrackers, despite living away from
people, and in safe places.

It appears to me that the gentle European stocks evolved in areas in which
humans largely controlled the availability of nest sites.  Anyone please
correct me if I'm wrong, since I'm quite curious about this.
