One of the concerns expressed about glyphosate is that due to its mode
of action it may have indirect effects on beneficial microbes in soil
and in gut microflora.  As always, projecting these possible ill
effects from reductionist lab studies to the real world is difficult.
Just like a varroa mite and its progeny or a high dose of viruses on a
pupa, or microsporidian spores fed to an adult worker can be documented
to produce serious effects, projecting what happens in colonies in the
real world is challenging.  Further complicating the matter is tracing
the active ingredient applied either to control weeds early on in the
growth cycle, or to dry crops close to harvest, and what is actually
potentially found on the market shelf.
