Of course. You are quite right to avoid anything stronger than wood or burlap smoke. Nasty fuel like bailing twine, newspapers, rags soaked with  used crankcase oil should be avoided.

In the essential oil category, I would include menthol, thymol, eucalyptol, etc. These are not known to harm bees if not used to excess. The dose makes the poison is the fundamental principle of toxicology.
