i've seen this done to catch a swarm with minimal flying.  i'd consider this for a swarm in a crowded area.  it was my understanding (perhaps flawed), that upon burning, the ammonium nitrate produces nitrous oxide?  they do just "drop".

yes, i've also read of using this when the bees are on the dandelions rather than the fruit trees they are being paid to service :)  i've never heard of it for queen introduction....interesting.
