There have already been some very scientific replies to this question from
Naznin.

My thought is this: The reason they began to supplement formula with
DHA/ARA is because studies showed that breastfed babies had better IQ's and
visual acuity than the formula fed babies, i.e. better brain development.
So, they decided to add DHA/ARA to formula in some amount (not sure how they
arrived at the amount to use. In fact, different manufacturers add
different amounts.) Now they tell us that mom's diets and therefore their
milk is deficient. But breastfed babies still have better brain
development.

I think the issue is a hoax perpetuated by the companies that make formula
and make the supplements for moms to take. Yes, women in different parts of
the world have varying amounts of these fatty acids in their milk, but
babies all over the world do better when they are breastfed!

I would love to have your opinion on this. A nutritionist says that there is
DHA/ARA in breastmilk only if mothers consume enough foods containing it.
And studies show that many women are deficient in this and we should be
telling moms to include those sources in their diets, otherwise there is not
enough DHA/ARA in their milk.
Any thoughts?
Thank you in advance.
Naznin.
