After reading Michael Woolridge's chapter in Breastfeeding: Biocultural
Perspectives I'd like to offer some food for thought:
Test weights only measure volume.
As we have seen with Overactive Letdown (Overfeeding) Syndrome, High volume
intakes of low calorie foremilk results in colicky -fussy behavior and
initially high weight gain. ABM has a consistent fat concentration,
breastmilk does not. Thus measuring how much volume the baby took in (as
compared to oz. of ABM) gives no valuable information. A baby may be getting
a large volume but not enough fat Kcal.
Just my .02 worth
