There are 2 fractions that make the total bilirubin, the direct
(conjugated)and indirect (uncongugated)fractions. Jaundice that occurs
in the newborn is almost always associated with elevations of indirect
bilirubin. Elevations of direct bilirubin are usually associated with
bliliary tract obstructive phenomenon such as biliary atresia. I hope
this helps.
