I know the original post was some time ago (I am just back from
vacation and catching up htrough the Archives-so glad they can now
be viewed chronologically!!!)  This may have been said already, but
didn't want to let the question pass and be forgotten before I get
through all them.  Sorry if this is repetitive!

Number one method for saving one's back when helping a mom in the
hospital:  RAISE THE BED!!!  I usually don't think about this until
after my back begins to complain.  Just don't forget to lower it
again before you leave the mom!

I frequently find myself running from one side of the bed to the
other to either get a good view of what baby is doing at the breast
or to help the mom in a way that she can easily duplicate what I'm
doing.  I often think it would be easier if I could be suspended
directly over the mom (TIC).
