I also have had great success with moms in using HBOTB techniques. I agree
that not all babies need this type of consoling, but in working with new
mothers or overwhelmed moms in Public Health it is a great tool in teaching
families how to respond to their infants cues. Our society has changed greatly
over the last several decades and most new moms and dads do not have the
experience of watching their mothers care for younger siblings or extended
family caring for their infants. The result is a generation of moms who really
are at a loss for how to calm a crying baby. I think Dr. Karp's work has made
great strides in educating families in a very involved and non-threatening
manner how to interact with their infants and meet their needs. I applaud all
of his efforts and I think his work is making a huge difference helping parents
bond with their infants.
