Allen,

There was an entire issue of Visitor Behavior (now Visitor Studies Today)
devoted to this topic. It is Volume X, Number 2, Summer 1995 Edited by
Sherri Lankford, Stephen Bitgood, and Amy Cota. If has a very good lit
review (up to that point in time). It is organized as principles and also
contains specific studies. If you do not have access to this, contact me off
list with your address and I will make you a copy and mail it to you. I did
a study with Steve Bitgood on this topic, and we found that redundant
systems were needed (e.g., signage, paper maps, personal directions,
orientation boards) and that there was a significant relationship to the the
amount of time people spent getting oriented and their overall level of
satisfaction with the visit. (That study I would need to "dig out" but will
if you would like it.)

Let me know if you would like a copy of the issue of Visitor Behavior.
