Hi Mary Jo,

A few years ago I was looking at globes for an exhibit to display
where you would arrive if you dug a hole directly through the center
of the earth and came out the other side -- the question Alice asks
herself as she is falling down the rabbit hole. We eventually built a
contraption with two tiny video cameras pointed at the antipodes of a
motorized globe that visitors could control with two knobs. It didn't
seem to me that any of the globes I could find were tough enough for
direct manipulation by "public hands" (nice description!). The one
candidate we considered was a Cram 12" diameter with a "Horizontal
Ring Mount" meant for classroom use. This mount is a simple "cradle"
device, much studier than the usual gimbals -- but it might be a
problem that the globe can be simply removed and rolled across the
floor! It seems they no longer make that style, but a few dealers
seem to have them in stock (though they may be out of date
geopolitically) :

One of my favorite globes though is not a globe at all:

good luck,
