Linda, you're correct. I did receive that information in my endeavors as
well. I just forgot to mention it. Thanks.

Lou

Hello All,
I hesitate to get into the mix at this late stage as I have seen this
subject line for several weeks but thought I might add a word of advice I
received when I built a program in Kansas City called EarthWorks. I
originally envisioned a portion of the activities each day using native
American stories since the environmental message in many of them is so
strong. To test this (and many other ideas) I held a week long workshop
with 20 educators and every few hours had a new presenter so we could really
get the full picture of what could be done around the environment. One was
an author named Michael Caduto who wrote many books using native American
stories he combined with lesson plans. I also invited Dan Wildcat from
Haskell Institute (an Indian college near us) as we explored this idea. Dan
quietly said that it was wrong to tell his people's stories on the hour (or
on demand) or even use it as part of an experience. He pointed out that
these stories were part of their religious beliefs and it would conversely
seem odd for someone on the hour or in most museum setting to tell Bible
stories (e.g. water into wine in the Chemistry lab). So...I just pass this
on since it really made me stop and think. Needless to say, we did not
follow that path at EarthWorks of using native American stories to convey
environmental messages. So....take this little story as you will.
